As researchers discover more about the biology of cancer, therapeutics are becoming better targeted and more effective. However, this focus on drugs for smaller groups of patients means there will also be more challenges in designing and running clinical trials.

This paper discusses the response to these challenges to include the growing role of the CRO medical team to support the development program; acting as the link among the sponsor, investigator and research site personnel; and providing access to skills, expertise and local knowledge.
